Two Postdoc Positions: Marine and Aerial Robots / Bioinspired Actuation and Sensing / Robot Localization and Coordination
There are 2 Postdoctoral Research Fellow positions available immediately for enthusiastic individuals to assume leading roles in Prof. Kamran Mohseni’s group at the University of Florida. We are looking for self-motivated researchers to work in areas including marine/aerial robotics, bio-inspired underwater propulsion and sensing, robot localization, motion planning, mobile vehicle control, and multi-robot cooperation and networking. Desired candidate should have both strong background in theoretical analysis and hands-on experience in robot prototyping and testing. Candidates with experience in soft robotics, visual guidance, and signal processing are also welcome to apply. Successful applicants will work on one or more of the following research topics:
Topic 1: Bio-inspired propulsion and sensing for autonomous underwater vehicles (AUVs).
We need a Postdoctoral researcher to take over work analyzing the sensing and propulsion mechanisms of squid and jellyfish (jetting) and fish (flapping) and implementing these propulsive and sensing mechanisms on engineered AUVs. We have demonstrated that several aspects of this unsteady jetting and distributed sensing mechanisms are advantageous to marine systems including thrust augmentation from vortex ring formation, a nearly instantaneous robust thrust output, obstacle detection, and disturbance rejection. We have also developed analytical models to explain these dynamics. You will be leading a group of graduate and undergraduate students in furthering our understanding and implementation of this technique. As such the position will require the following skills: analytical modeling of fluid flows and experimental validation, underwater vehicle modeling, identifying appropriate control strategies, AUV design and integration, familiarity with both additive and subtractive fabrication, and good teamwork. Topic 2: Underwater localization and multi-robot coordination.
We are interested in novel navigation/localization solutions that help enhance the capabilities of compact underwater robots in large-scale environmental sensing missions. We address the critical issue of underwater localization in long-term missions and the associated ocean sensing problems. Another research focus is the coordination of multi-robot systems under the influence of strong geophysical circulations. You will continue addressing these critical issues within a multidisciplinary research environment with rich theoretical and experimental background. Required skills: sensor fusion for robot localization, control theory and multi-agent systems, and fluid dynamics fundamentals. Topic 3: Micro-aerial vehicle control and coordination.
We haveaircraft. For example, we discovered that “roll stall” and resonant modes are associated with the jittery nature of small MAV flights. In addition, lateral-longitudinal coupling exists in vehicle dynamics and the needs to be properly addressed in controller design. We have been developing several generations of customized MAVs and autopilots. Required skills: flight dynamics, experience in embedded systems and autopilots, MAV design and prototyping, multi-agent coordination and path planning, and control theory.
